How many times have you heard a salesperson from a potential vendor proudly make the claim “my EHR is certified”. Almost as if to say there product is better because it is certified. Let’s be clear…with hundreds of ONC-ATCB certified products broken down by full products, modular products or some other flavor of product, does ONC-ATCB certification really mean that a product will effectively meet your needs… the answer is a resounding “NO”. Be aware that ONC-ATCB certification just means that the product can support the meaningful use measures necessary to comply HITECH eligibility. And, in fact it doesn’t even ne dot be a full product, as there a categories of “modular” products that just serve a specific function.
There was a day when certification meant that an EHR had to pass scrutiny on hundreds of measures related to clinical functionality and usability. I know this because I was fortunate enough to have been a member of the CCHIT ambulatory workgroup a while back and spent many hours working with my colleagues to develop criteria to help determine HER quality form a functional standpoint.
