Electronic prescribing is a hot topic across the nation as New York’s state mandate requiring all prescriptions to be handled electronically draws near. The Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission recently received approval from the DEA to process and release accreditations to electronic prescribing vendors in a streamlined method. This accreditation provides assurance to practices that their prescriptions are being handled safely and securely as well as providing privacy to the patient.
As dental practices begin implementing electronic prescribing platforms they need to be sure their vendor has been certified. Without this DEA certification, dentists cannot prescribe controlled substances. It is time to accept the reality that the dental community needs to step away from inefficient processes involving paper prescribing and embrace the benefits of electronic prescribing.
